Many people saw the potential in the business and also recognised that with a little bit of thought and initiative, I was adding some value to the surf travel industry, offering services for our tourists that no-one else really wanted to touch. I ended up getting write ups and press releases in major inflight airline magazines, (the airlines loved me - obviously this helped them with their reticence to carry surfboards on flights) newspapers and major surfing magazines.
Naturally enough though this publicity also brought some competition. Copy-cats who didn't actually want to add any value to traveling surfers, but just wanted to cash in on someone elses efforts. You can tell this though, because they never offer any new products or services. They copy our offer, they copy our prices and hope you use them instead.
Its annoying, but its a factor in any industry I guess. I'd much rather real competition though, where our competitors try to innovate and create a better experience for you by bringing new products to the industry. Unfortunately, it just doesn't happen that way.
Regardless and following on from the early success of our long term surfboard rental services, our next innovation was a surfboard storage service. This one was aimed at regular visitors, giving them the option of leaving their surfboards with us, for a nominal monthly fee, to enable them to surf using their own surfboard every time they visit. We priced this so traveling surfers only need to visit twice a year to save money they otherwise would have spent on surfboard hire. This way we successfully attached a great price to a great new service.
And from there, we contacted many other small, like minded business operators, so we could create value to you by packaging up other holiday activities. Surf lessons and coaching, car rentals, nightclub tours and discounted entry to some of our attractions are all part of the services we now provide.
